The City of San Marcos is making preparations ahead of the total solar eclipse event that will occur on Monday, April 8, 2024. The eclipse event will begin at approximately 12:16 p.m., with maximum eclipse occurring at 1:36 p.m. San Marcos is just outside the path of totality, but residents can still expect to see a “ring of fire” when the moon covers the sun nearly completely.
The City anticipates increased traffic in the area as observers travel to preferred viewing locations. In addition to traffic congestion, the influx of visitors could cause communication infrastructure challenges, including service interruptions or internet outages, and increase demands for essentials like fuel and groceries.
Staff from across the City’s departments have been meeting for months to discuss plans and proactively prepare for this historic event.
“We’ve reviewed after action reports complied by cities near the line of totality during previous total solar eclipse events,” said Emergency Management Coordinator Rob Fitch. “We anticipate traffic will be the most significant impact in San Marcos, but we could also see service interruptions or supply shortages. We want everyone in our community to be aware and plan ahead to encourage safety and convenience throughout the event.”
To prepare, City staff suggest residents and visitors fill or charge vehicles several days prior to the eclipse. If possible, avoid travel on the day of the event or allow extra time to commute if travel is unavoidable. Drivers could consider packing snacks or water in case significant delays are experienced on the road.
In the event of service interruptions, residents and visitors are encouraged to enable Wi-Fi calling on cellphones. Customers should consider having cash on hand, in the event of outages impacting credit card transactions.
“Plan to run your errands and pick up groceries or medicine prior to the eclipse event, but don’t over-buy.” said Fitch. “Safety is our top priority, and our Police and Fire Departments have scheduled extra staff to work the day of the event to respond to incidents or traffic concerns and ensure operational needs are met.”
The City does not have official or sponsored events planned to commemorate the eclipse.
Anyone viewing the total solar eclipse should obtain proper eyewear and avoid observing the eclipse through camera lenses, binoculars, or telescopes without special-purpose solar filters, as this can result in instant severe eye injury.
